The pharmacy that Chinese Herbal Medicine draws from is one of the most studied collections of medicinal plants in the world.

In the 1970s, the pharmacologist Tu Youyou searched classical Chinese medical texts for a malaria treatment and isolated artemisinin from sweet wormwood, a plant Chinese practitioners had used for more than a thousand years. A preparation note buried in the old texts, that the plant be extracted at low temperature, turned out to be the key to keeping the compound active. Artemisinin became the World Health Organization’s first-line malaria treatment, and in 2015 Tu Youyou received the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for the discovery. The tradition had pointed modern science straight to a compound it had not yet named.
